WMBH.org is pleased to welcome
top-rated WOKY disk jockey and original WOKY-TALKY host
Bob White to Personality Profile.
We are also proud to welcome Irv Miller,
long-time stock broker and 3-times a day voice of Wall Street Review on WTMJ radio for 13 years.
Yes, he is one and the same person...
|
This is Irv Miller's radio and post-radio radio career, as told
by Irv himself.
Irv's career started
by accident in the late 40's and within a few years had him rubbing shoulders with fame. The fortune was to follow later. In the meantime, as WOKY's "Bob White", Irv was twice voted by the Teen Toppers Club "Milwaukee's top DJ" and MC'd many
shows with big-name performers such as Nat King Cole and Perry Como. And Irv was just a 'swing and a miss away' from becoming the voice of the LA Dodgers. But fate had other plans.
The change in music and programming styles in the mid-60's - from losely formatted Big Band to tightly formatted Top40 Rock - signaled a change in Irv's career and an end to Bob White. Irv made what seems like a quantum leap - from DJ to stock broker. But once again Irv's distinct voice and quick-study delivery were put to use on the radio - this time as host of Wall Street Review. As the decade drew to a close, Irv fully transitioned to brokering and retired in 2006 as Sr. VP of a large
stock brokerage firm.
We hope you enjoy Personality
Profile with Bob White/Irv Miller.

Interview Synopsis: In part 1 of this
2-part series, Irv gives us a
fun and dizzying history lesson in
Milwaukee radio ownership, format
changes and frequency flips. We hear about Top 40 radio pioneers Gordon McLenden and Jerry Bartell, the use of 'show
biz' names, payola and a near-miss with Major league baseball's LA Dodgers through his Tommy Harmon sports network affiliation. And also of the changing radio and music scene, WOKY ratings domination and the then one-of-a-kind talk show called WOKY TALKY.
Like
most broadcast people, Irv worked at
a number of stations. After on-air
warm up pitches as Irv Miller at ...

Irv had an impressive
& top-rated 10 year run at WOKY as
Bob White starting in 1957. Adopting his 'show biz' name, Bob DJ'd at WOKY for 9 years
working every major airshift. But as the format tightened and
the music became more rock & roll oriented, the
big band lover wanted 'out'. Instead,
WOKY made him the first host of
WOKY-TALKY, Milwaukee's first
talk-radio program. During the same time period,
Lawrence Welk offered Irv the job of
announcer for his TV show. But Irv
had his eyes on a different career
- after a year of six-nights a week 10pm to midnight hosting WOKY TALKY, it was off to a fulltime stock
broker position and 13 years as the
voice of WTMJ's Wall Street Review (as Irv Miller).
